highlight of my week

Coreyy

OMG OMG ONG IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING NEXT WEEK. I never thought I’d see the day where EBTR got animated 😭😭😭

Beignet Blues

This fight and y'alls reaction were much anticipated!! 🔥🔥

Seal

Peak fiction of the highest degree.

Mozart Waddell

It's sad we have to say goodbye to Unohana. Here's some lore surrounding her bankai. Minazuki releases a pool of blood-like acid that corroded both her and Kenpachi's body down to the bone. She survived her own Bankai due to her advance kido skills healing herself and Kenpachi.

Seal

“At last, we finally get to see the most insanely & visually contradicting BAN-KAI 🩸MINAZUKI🩸 [All Things End/An End to all people's lives] Fun Fact: The Shikai of this Zanpakuto share the same name pronunciation but the Kanji for it (水無月) is different from the Bankai state (肉雫唼) The Shikai state of it basically means "Flesh Drops Gorge" as the Healing Manta Ray (肉=flesh, 雫=drop/drip (like rain), 唼=to eat/gorge) It’s like eating in a violent manner, while the Bankai state means “All Things End”. This is used to indicate that this Banaki works in conjunction with her Shikai as a contradiction: creating a place of cyclical acid blood as the substance of her Zanpakuto’s animal form being a Manta Ray that we saw back in Soul Society, where both the user and their opponent dies over and over at an accelerated rate- that’s why they’re both shown to turn into skeletons mid battle but then returning back to normal like nothing happened. As for their relationship, Due to Unohana’s sin being that of causing Zaraki to subconsciously suppress himself making him weaker for the sake of enjoying prolonged battles, although not ever explicitly stated and not by blood, they’re Lost siblings. This is the 2nd major fight, or rather BATTLE of the Thousand-Year🩸Blood🩸War, next week we dive into PEAK FICTION OF THE HIGHEST MOTHERFUCKING DEGREE KNOWN AS “EVERYTHING BUT THE💧RAIN💧” as the natural root peak source of Bleach’s story/plot!” - credits to Truth and Polygon.

Seal

Anyways for what I have to say about this episode- Let it be known that the new current Zaraki wouldn’t exist without Unohana’s guidance and blessing. Yes he has more spiritual pressure/raw strength and potential then her but she could have outright ended him at any point in this battle since she has far greater skill, hax and experience, what makes that clear is bidding him farewell just allowing him to pierce and finish her off, sacrificing herself. As for their 1st fight she was caught off guard not expecting a child to be able to even harm her as it was explicitly shown + she never used Bankai. Zaraki himself would agree and slaughter anyone that dares to disrespect her only to bring him up. R.I.P to the 1st Kenpachi Yachiru Unohana as the last remaining member of the OG 13 Court Guards Squads as the best and strongest woman in all of BLEACH. You got to pass on your legacy and on your own terms. Here is the author’s final illustration of her https://twitter.com/tite_official/status/1602324898604630021?s=61&t=df7YU9hfBr4nqePzmPga7A and the finale of this cour of episodes will be a 1 hour special as EPs 12 and 13 https://twitter.com/bleachanimation/status/1602324646832979968?s=61&t=df7YU9hfBr4nqePzmPga7A

MackeyMoose

This copy and paste was debunked with today's episode. They turn into skeletons because they are stripping themselves away for battle. Her bankai is shown to heal in this episode. Or else their feet would have melted. Her bankai is just blood control.

MackeyMoose

I did. You just did a copy paste. Her bankai is not acid. Never has been. It was a fan theory due the way the panels showed her. Kubo never once confirmed or said it was acid. It was debunked with this episode. The skeleton is not an actual thing. It is to show they are stripping themselves away for battle. They aren't actually melting

Quinton Campbell

Can someone explain to me why Unohana had to die?

Seal

We know it’s acid based on her Shikai as that’s how her manta ray heals people in its stomach. She’s shown to instantly heal on her own and then when she adds that to her Bankai she’s able to heal so fast that it’s almost as if it’s an illusion not even happening, Zaraki even picked up on it as he comments that he was asleep the whole time, not realizing what she was doing. I wouldn’t have comment this if I wasn’t sure myself.

Seal

Although I’m not entirely happy about it as I would’ve loved to see her fight & kill some Quinces, especially alongside Zaraki as a Tag Team duo, I see what the author was going for as she simply felt like she had nothing else to live for after passing down her legacy and sacrificing herself for the greater good. At least she went on her own terms and that’s good enough for me. The overall theme of this arc is about the sins of the old generation coming back to haunt them and having the new generation take over in their place. She was from an era long gone and that was only confirmed it to her after Yamamoto was killed.

Julio Morales

sheera finding a way to talk shit on renji 🤣🤣

MackeyMoose

I get where you are coming from. But notice you said the acid heals. It was not shown ever that it was dangerous acid. It never showed that it heals so fast it was an illusion. Kenpachi would black out each time so he had no idea how much time passed. He thought he was imagining things because he blacked out. The things you are stating are fan theories that were never confirmed because it was half a chapter. The skeletons are them stripping themselves away for battle, which is literally in the episode to debunk the acid being deadly part of her bankai. Zaraki commented on being sleep as his true self hadn't woken up since their original fight. And if her healing was that great, she would have been able to save Byakuya.

MackeyMoose

But I do see your points and you could be right. This has been an argument since the chapter released

Overload

Let me break it down…in all this time, for all of Ichigo’s battles he never had a Zanpakuto. Ever since he lost his borrowed powers and started training with Kisuke he did not have a Zanpakuto, it just materialised…much like how Quincies materialise their weapons using reishi and as we now Ichigo is part Quincy…so if Ichigo never had a Asauchi and never found a sword like Kenpachi and spent time imprinting onto it what is the thing he has been swinging around this whole time and calling Zangetsu. If you need another hint, what color are Quincy arrows…what color was the energy wave when Ichigo used Getsuga Tenshou outside of bankai…

Kingmakaii

He is now truly kenpachi 😭

Coreyy

I hope over the next episode or two that they really focus in on the dialogue and not try to make TOOOOO many jokes. These next episodes will explain everything and require a lot of attention. Especially episode 12 if the pacing goes the way I think it will

Earphone Jack

The way Unohana said “Bankai” had me shook! And her bankai was already scary in the manga, but the anime really enhanced its scariness. 😳 And Oetsu is my favorite Squad 0 member. I love him lol.

Mozart Waddell

Solid symbolism used to describe the relationship between the Soul Reapers and their assigned Asauchi. The blade resembles a shirasaya. Shirasaya's are the wooden sheath (and handle) used to preserve the blade during storage or transport. The shirasaya is not battle functional. It was interesting seeing the Asauchi personality come forth overtime just like during the crafting of a katana the blade is fitted with a tsuka, guard, and lacquered saya.

Overload

They literally just explained it in this episode…it’s called deduction. It’s obvious if your paying attention

DatKid_Kaneki

NO JOKES NEXT WEEK YOU THREE. alot of explaining is done next episode so gotta understand details for next episode. very important

Revstarallstar .

Why we acting Like Renji aint one if the strongest soul reapers atm

Seal

Alright notice how when Zaraki falls on that blood acid, it’s the same part of his body that is turned to bone, That’s when it’s shown to be dangerous and Unohana is shown to instantly heal with it by being amplified with kido. Apparently she’s only able to do it while fighting as opposed to actually helping someone recover from near death like Byakuya who is in no condition to fight back, almost as if that’s a requirement or rather what she said it’s used for to prolong the battle, just like Zaraki suppressing himself. This proves that her healing is circumstantial. If that’s not enough to convince you otherwise then I’ll just leave it at that, however I will admit that you are right that it can also apply to Zaraki being asleep from his true self at the same time.

Seal

Ironically though just like with this episode having a bit of comedy, that episode based on the pacing should also have some comedy with you know who’s flashing BARE Titties, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they censor it by having it be pixelated. All I know is they can’t cut it out considering the important dialogue.

Isaac

Reading this fight in the Manga, the visuals of the fight were confusing af and they never explained what her Bankai did. In the anime ... seeing it in motion still doesn't give any information. It's not acid because despite the appearance of his arm and face melting off, his clothes (just his arm sleeve) were destroyed in that scene too, but then after that not only did his skin and muscle return but his clothing too. You can't heal clothes like that so it's not acid. Her Bankai is gonna just be a forever mystery on what it's suppose to be? I mean props to showing it do that cool whiplash, blood slice animation but that's just physical combat prettiness. I wanna know the ability. I always had a headcanon that her Bankai undoes any wound the person has ever experienced in their life. That would make sense to contradict her healing Shikai.

danial javady

Yachiru is such a fucking dope character and we don't even get to see her in action. Absolute travesty.

Coreyy

It wouldn’t surprise me if they did or didn’t do that

DatKid_Kaneki

my headcanon is that you see the way that we just saw that red bath when ichigo and renji were healing. im guessing its something similar where she gains more energy for her to be stronger. also we saw that the baths would usually rip away clothes if ur spiritual pressure isnt strong enough

Marcus Lyles

*Renji looking at Ichigo after he found out Ichigo failed*: “LOOK AT ME….I’M the main character now!”

Marcus Lyles

The anime did kind of explain it. Her bankai does two things, auto heals her, which we see it do several times, and allows her to manipulate blood for attacks. The skeleton part is simply a metaphor to show that they’ve shed all their inhibitions they’re going all out and being their true selves

Mozart Waddell

It would be tragic if Unohana's body gets left down there while Yamamoto lieutenant received a full attendance ceremonial cremation on top of an adorned pyre. This woman is owed a memorial 😮‍💨

Bryce Jackson

Nah man she'll be white outed my guess censored is too distracting probably just a white bodysuit kinda thing

Seal

A Soul Reaper’s clothing known as a “Shihakusho” is part of their spiritual pressure almost like a health bar and is shown to be restored back in EP 288 when Unohana restored Ichigo’s back to normal as they were heading for fake karakura. Her Shikai and Bankai are in conjunction and a contradiction with one another as they both relate to acid.

Seal

@Devin B The Quincys are too OP….. it would’ve been a perfect counter.

Seal

That would still count as being censored which means in the BD’s we will have it uncensored as only a matter of time.

Isaac

Aaaah- I see. I forgot about that with their clothes.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Ah man, they did that "My name is...." cut away in the manga too. Gah this was so satisfying.

Dougie Fresh

Actually, Oh Etsu calls Ichigo a fake because he never had an asauchi. He didn't take it from rukia, Rukia still has her sword. What the shape of his sword actually is... Is something quite interesting. The asauchi is a tool used for a soul reaper to pour their soul into and make a personal zanpaktou, but there's something going on with Ichigos soul that is taking the form of a fake zanpaktou.. Hmmmm. And so Oh Etsu is telling Ichigo to find out what all the parts of his soul are, but let's go EVERYTHING BUT THE RAIN WOOOOOH it's gonna be hype!

Elyx235

*Fun fact* Ichigo has been in Bankai form since episode 3 and hasn’t reverted back since 👀

AsuraTM

Nah the “ Shihakusho” representing their spiritual pressure only applies to ichigo in his bankai form since his clothes are a part of his bankai. It doesn’t apply to everyone else. Unohanas bankai is just auto healing like you said and blood manipulation to increase her range and power

Jason Eastman

I love how Roshi said "Renji?!?!" like Soulja Boi said "Drake?!?!"

Chimpman

No, they didn't explain what you said. All we know is that he has some sort of Quincy powers and he never had an actual Zanpakuto. You are giving the explanation that we get in the next episode. Delete the fucking comment, you look like a clown.

Yoxxhio

??? almost every main soul reaper is stronger than renji at this point

Yoxxhio

Didn't we just see it heal unohanas clothes? on her torso. shinigami clothes reflect their spiritual pressure so it can be "healed"

Overload

They explain how Zanpakuto come into existence, they explain Ichigo is a fake, they explain he wasn’t chosen by an Asauchi. Based on those facts and the information we already have this is the basic conclusion, these facts alone leave you with simple questions…how does he have a Zanpakuto, where and when did he first start using one, if he’s a fake Shinigami what is he really, all of which can be answered with information already given throughout the series. Not understanding that or realising they’ve already explained this without spelling it out makes you look slow.

Jdogzero Silverblade

every fight he loses. well almost every fight. think the only real fight he won was against the lightbringer woman. and that one disposable arancar that came with grimjow. but other than that he lost to basically everyone else.

Cameron 鳥

they did not say all this in the episode thats literally what the next episode is for

Willy gatsby

The renji disrespect at the end Lmmfao don’t worry he gets beefed up

Anonymous

noone pointing out that Zaraki named his leiutenant after Unohana

wavyesper

"Nice to meet you Zaraki Kenpachi. My name is..." I had chills

Psi47

The Renji disrespect don't even make sense. I know yall making jokes but Renji is thinking that Ichigo is absolutely needed to save Soul Society, so his confusion is centered on why oetsu would just write him off and send him home. Nobody was picking anyone over the other yall lmao they BOTH needed to pass. It says more about Renji being able to withstand the 71 hours than Ichigo despite both of them being fully healed and now having more Reiatsu than ever from the last episode.

Denickart

They showed Renji of all people when Unohana was talking about comrades Kenpachi can fight on equal terms with?

ERRORCODE616

Unohana out here wielding both Rivers of Blood and Hand of Malenia. I absolutely love the animation they gave her Bankai.

Jamar Arrington

I don't know if it was intentional, but I find it interesting that the term asauchi was first used way back when Ichigo was put down by Kenpachi, by the old man, as he gave him one to use to fight his inner hollow. Guess it makes sense to run both characters training parallel since they don't know things about themselves.

Anonymous

It has nothing to do with Rukia about not having an asauchi. They should be explaining it in the next episode

RuTo-San

This is off topic but can you technically have kids with a Zankpatou?

Kurumi

need that Unohana mod in Elden Ring asap

RuTo-San

dead ass serious LOL it's because they have a human form

Davon Thomas

Episode 12 and 13 of this first part of the TYBW is gonna be a hour long special. December 26th. Then we go on break for a few months

Overlord Saber

Ahh yes the Hood Den, my favorite place

Nickevans21

Next is one of my favorite short arcs of the whole series. The build up to this has been a long time coming.

tiana britton

It’s not about whose stronger, Renji actually knows himself which means he knows his soul which is needed to have and use a zanpakuto. Y’all gonna find out real soon about my boy. Like don’t play him! Also Renji being included when Unohana was talking about allies he can fight with/be on equal terms with should be a hint instead of thinking it’s cap. As a Kenpachi she wouldn’t just put ANYBODY up there! No spoilers but it’s coming soon. Well probably in cour 2.

tiana britton

OKAY!!! Thank you!!! Exactly that. & Ichigo def doesn’t see him as weak! Like a lot is gonna be revealed with him & I can’t wait! I’m gonna be just as if not more insufferable than the Renji haters.

Devin B

@PreliatorUno it definitely would've been the perfect counter but then it wouldn't be much of a war with those two on the field either.

Polygon

That was revealed in his flashback after he fought Ichigo. He tells Yachiru he named her after the one person he admires.

godUsoland

It's crazy that Ichigo has been just chilling in his Bankai this entire time. Like, does it not drain him at all to have his Bankai on while eating, sleeping, and fighting for days?

Brandipity

Just cant wait to see rukia... I cant wait to see any of it, im really sad its a seasonal series BUT ill accept it as long as the quality consists and Kubo makes some tweeks to the anime vs the manga cus that ending was not the best...

godUsoland

Major Castlevania Carmilla vs. Isaac vibes in that fight. Rivers and pools of blood are great settings for epic showdowns!

trippersigs22

Man, I remember reading this when it first came out and I still feel the same way. This stuff with Unohana would have been a lot better if it was something Kubo actually talked about throughout the series and didn't feel like something he just made up on spot.

Stagger Lee

zaraki in base mopping up the 2nd strongest shinigami since yama in bankai

godUsoland

Hey, he's been keeping up with Ichigo & company's shocking level of growth. Renji went from normal Lt. level to hanging out with Captains and fighting Espada. Plus he's getting the full Squad 0 training

godUsoland

Well, Komamura exists as a Dog person, so anything is possible. They'd need to be able to use Bankai though, because that lets a Spirit manifest in the real world. (We saw during Ichigo's Bankai training)

Martini

I was curious about her bankai too, and fortunately there was an explanation from the fandom wiki, though I don't know how accurate it is. To explain her bankai, first u need to understand her shikai. We've seen her shikai, which is that huge green monster; tldr, her shikai has extreme healing capabilities. However, like her own personality, her bankai is the complete opposite of her shikai; rather than heal, it is supposed to hurt. By coming in contact with the blood from her bankai, she is able to not only reopen physical wounds, but also mental wounds, essentially destroying her opponent's spirit. She is also able to control the blood, including forming it into sharp blade droplets. It's really a shame how fleshed out her ability was on paper, but we never got to see it in action. The wiki goes into a lot more depth on how her zanpakuto is symbolic of her character, which I thought was very interesting.

Austin Parker

So the Zaraki/Unohana fight I believe was supposed to be paralleled to their time with Oetsu, so their fight last 3 days, as well as Ichigo and Renji’s fight. I don’t remember a lot of this part of the story, but explaining something in the episode: Ichigo never had a traditional Asauchi, so what was his Zanpakto all this this? Can’t wait to see Ichigo’s roots in the next couple episodes!

Gyro

Ahhhh rivers of blood

soul

defeating a caption without a bankai now that's crazy

Anonymous

Unohana did not let Kenny beat her, if he didn’t already have the strength it wouldn’t matter how many times she killed him, he still wouldn’t have beat her

ok

Wait WHAT?? Y'all didn't know she was killing him??? WHAT

ok

10:20 no she did not "let" him kill her. she died because he actually killed her. she was healing him up until the point where he was strong enough, and she would know if he was strong enough by her being killed. if she let him do it, it would defeat the purpose of the whole thing

Jalani Abdul-Aziz

Can some explain why Unohana had to die for Zaraki to level up ? I feel like she definitely could’ve lived but I’m prolly missing something.

Kevin Kovacs

I don't think he just made this up out of nowhere... there were hints to this so.. but I get what you mean.

Arc

Because these two are basically animals, they lose themselves in battle and if Zaraki remained calm (to the point that he can let her live) he wouldn't have leveled up. But the only Bleach content I've seen is TYBW, so I'm not 100% sure.

Dune

I view it as one of the most fearsome person he's ever faced was the only real challenge for him but he never wanted to kill her and so he put that lock on himself to hold back so that he can enjoy fights with even people he deems weaker than him. By killing unohana it essentially releases that lock and tells him its ok to go all out.

Mad4Life

Edgy writing for the sake of being edgy but Bleach fanboys will try to make this shit seem deep when Kubo is mainly all style no depth.

Barry

Solid commitment to the username. Mad4Life.

Son Goku

she choose to die and not heal herself because he reached the level she wantd him too.

Son Goku

Renji is no joke, literally no sold a punch by of the Royal Guards which send ichigo flying while being in Bandages.

Mad4Life

@Barry Trust me I'm not mad. I'm enjoying this anime the most this season in fact. But let's not act like Kubo is known for his depth. His writing and characters are mainly written to be cool and stylish not for being deep.

AsuraTM

@Mad4life When you’re looking things from a surface level of course nothing‘s deep to you. It literally said why she had to die

Mad4Life

Yeah it's just like how Uchiha have to kill somebody they love in order to unlock mangekyuo sharingan I've seen it all before. It's still edgy writing at the end of the day. You can still enjoy a show while still accepting its flaws but obviously fanboys only know 2 options. Either you think the show is perfect or you're hating.

TimmSchmimm

Nah but it was explained throughout the entirety of the fight over an over again, all the dialogue was only for the consumer to understand, that kenpachi will never let go off his unconscious restraint unless unohana dies because of his very first encounter with her. Ever since his mind has this restriction on him he never used maximum strength and only peaked where he fought unohana but even then it was not even enough to make him hear his own zanpakuto etc. and therefore never grow as a soul reaper power level wise. His subconscious fear was killing unohana by accidently overpowering her, as fighting her gave him the most excitement he ever had. Really simplified: Unohana understands kenpachi doesnt want to break his favourite toy so he holds back because he knows "when I find fun toy I need to be careful and slowly break it to have most fun except favourite toy because no other toy is as fun as my favourite toy unohana" but also "I shouldn't become too strong or one day I might break my favourite toy before I realize it, then I am big sad :(" and stuck with that mindset. So unohana makes him go rougher and rougher on his favourite toy and let's him break his toy on purpose so he doesn't ever have a reason to hold back his maximum potential.

Mad4Life

@TimmShimimm Okay when you put it that way that actually makes a lot of sense, so I'll give you that. I still think Bleach has iffy writing at times like not letting Byakuya die but your explanation changed my mind on why Unohana had to die.

Dalton Murray

@Mad4Life Byakuya was originally supposed to stay dead. That was Kubo's intention all along. The Byakuya fan boys came out of the wood works and caused a giant scene until Kubo finally reversed it.

Mad4Life

@Dalton Murray, I heard about that as well. Some fanboys be mad corny I swear.

Dalton Murray

@Mad4Life I know right? Don't get me wrong.. Byakuya's a good character. That was such a fitting death for him though. It was perfect for sparking motivation towards getting stronger for not only Ichigo but for Renji and Rukia too. I've read the manga to the end so I know what's coming. I'm just curious how it would have played differently if he had died at that moment.

Kévin Chamberlin

I thought my man sent back Ichigo to episode 1 lmao

Anonymous

Lupa needs to just watch the show sometimes

Thamor

Now we really need Kenpach vs Ichigo real rematch at some point in this arc.

JsnSkg

Unohana is so raw. Last week she became my favorite character, this week her bankai became my favorite bankai.... and then she had to die this episode. I mean, I saw it coming cuz they were implying and insinuating it would happen, but it still sucks.

JsnSkg

Blade God pretty much said, "If you're not banging your Zanpakutou every night, what are you even doing with your life?"

stressbean

I am so glad they animated this correctly. Just like how I read it years back. So much hype still to come. Unohana had one of the best twists in the story.

AltusCrefire

This whole episode, I was getting "Mommy Unohana" vibes from her, in a soul-reaper sorta way.

ShaquanVirse

Oooo Mommu Unohana Yess

2023-04-27 12:45:15 @Jalani Abdul-Aziz Since it appears no one was able to properly answer your question honestly speaking here is the truth: Although I’m not entirely happy about it as I would’ve loved to see her fight & kill some Quinces, especially alongside Zaraki as a Tag Team duo, I see what the author was going for as she simply felt like she had nothing else to live for after passing down her legacy and sacrificing herself for the greater good. At least she went on her own terms and that’s good enough for me. The overall theme of this arc is about the sins of the old generation coming back to haunt them and having the new generation take over in their place. She was from an era long gone and that was only confirmed it to her after Yamamoto was killed.

Jalani Abdul-Aziz

Thank you very much 😭I get it but like you said it’s kinda shitty it had to be like that @PreliatorUno

Joseph C Gdaniec

Honestly most of these replies seem to get the concept but not the literal reason. Unohara literally said I couldn't give you the name Kenpachi until now. That means this man was calling himself that but it wasn't his true name yet bc he hadn't earned it. His sword literally could not talk to him until he had earned his true name as Kenpachi

Jalani Abdul-Aziz

that was more what i was looking for. it clicks better for me cuz she said there couldn't be 2 kenpachi's at once. however, doesn't her saying that contradict the fact that there's been more kenpachi's other than her and zaraki? Idk if they are cannon but i know of at least 2 others going by the name kenpachi WHILE Unohana was alive. meaning she's "lost" and "regained" the title multiple times in the past without dying, so why couldn't she do it again...

Isaac

In the grand scheme of things, yes she did let him kill her. But yes, she didn't just "let" him like you guys are saying. She had a job to do to get him to that point where he can kill her without that mentality of playing with his own life.

Hasnain Khan

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

YungZeus

Would’ve been better if he didn’t waste her character too

Anonymous

No bro.. she didn’t let him get that kill shot off on her, he had to stop repressing his strength to be able to get to that point but Shira had said it like she let him get the kill strike on her and nah cause no matter how many times she killed him ‘n healed him if he wasn’t strong enough he wouldn’t have gotten that off on her.

Seal

Because she’s exposed herself to the current and strongest Kenpachi, so there is no going back with her just simply remain alive. It fits with the theme of the arc that I explained, even if we’re not happy or approve it.
