I'm sure it's previously been mentioned but the anime was modernized in some ways. The manga was set in the 1980s when NYC and the NYPD were an absolute mess. The insane amount of corruption in the plot makes a little more sense with that context.

Hope things turn around for you soon @Lychee. I recommend finding their gaming playlist and binge a ton of their playthrough streams on YouTube. I used to do this months I was strapped for cash. It's a good way to hold yourself over with uncut content until you're able to sub again.
