Some context for the angel statue: Apparently, when Shorter met Ash, his first impression was that he looked like the angel on a Christmas card his sister gave him. Basically, Shorter ties angel imagery with Ash, so the combination of hearing Ash's voice and seeing the angel statue is probably what snapped him out of it for a bit. Manga readers, correct me if I'm wrong tho lol
