man i gotta say it is so hard recommending madoka to new watchers because you legit cannot say anything about what makes it so good without spoiling all the parts that make it good. Anyway if anyone does watch it make sure you view episodes 1-8 of the tv/bluray anime then watch the 2nd and third movies. Skip the first movie you lose 20 minutes of the story if you watch it instead of the tv anime.

I wouldn't say Sakuta mourning the loss of "Kaede" was selfish. Kaede's new personality was basically a different person and naturally after becoming a big brother to that new personality you can imagine how heartbreaking it would be to lose that person even at the gain of getting the old personality back.

Not just you. Depending on how you look at it. Animation was good for 2nd season but the anime heavily rushed through the source material, skipped a couple big moments, and completely ruined one of the big reveals

My romcom suggestion would be Wotakoi: Love is Hard for an Otaku. Actually adults in that one. Would be a nice change of pace. Also VERY relatable.

One other thing about Sakuta's grief about Kaede is that he is the only person to know both Kaede's. His parents dipped out. His dad only showed relief with Kaede's old self returning, I think that is why Sakuta starts mourning right after his dad's reaction, cause he is the only one of his family that really cared that the 2-year Kaede existed and took care of her the entire time.

i cried too when i first watched this. i could only imagine how depressed MC felt after spending all that time with this new Kaede. Sometimes I think what if she didn't overhear her dad's conversations with the doctor and wasn't aware that she wasn't the "real kaede" if the dissociation would've lasted longer.

I think its more or less that everyone left him with kaede, not that he isnt happy that the old one is back it's just that for 2 years he had someone who was clingy, someone who relied on him for every one of their needs. Having someone be stuck to your arm like that and having someone do something repetitive for years and then to realize that thing or person is suddenly gone can strike a lot into someone. Not that he isnt happy just the constant state of same routine year by year being broken in a single day and your mind knowing that it wont be the same when you come to terms with something can kind of mess you up I guess.

The show has a specific perspective about Kaede that I think most people miss. The show treats Kaede with her memories, and the Kaede that existed in the two year gap as two separate people. The Kaede within that gap took on a different name, became a different person, was developing into someone new and original. The MC had basically swapped out one sister for this new person, and when the new Kaede swapped back again, it was very much like new Kaede had died, someone that he had come to appreciate like a sister in a different way from the person he’d known up till she came into his life. They had a special connection, and while he should feel great about the old Kaede returning, it’s still a trade. A life for a life. And because of how dependent new Kaede was, in a way, his bond and dependency on her being there to be someone that needed him inadvertently grew as well. I fully believe that taking care of new Kaede is one of the largest anchors that kept him sane through the constant ostracism he had to go through thanks to simply being hospitalized.

I may be late to the party, but just wanted to say that the comment about Sakuta's grieving being selfish made me angry. If my loved one dies, is it selfish if I grieve? Kaede post amnesia is a completely different person that Sakuta got to know for 2 years. That person is now gone. This Kaede died. It is basically a life for a life.
