Overlord is extremely dense coming from a light novel so yeah, there is a lot of information that it'll dump on you though it is worth it. Also, the 'Great one' who declared war is Ains, and Cocytus is the one leading his armor to crush the lizard people. Its not just some new characters starting a fight.

Remember last season they were talking about making an undead army but humans are to weak to turn into undeads because their levels are too low when they change over and Albedo I think or 1 of the maids told ains what if we turned the lizard man basically this is ains play to build high level undead soldiers

Yeah the light novel is incredible. It’s kinda disappointing that the anime went this route of dense information packing (s2ep1 being the worst offender). It’s hard to appreciate the world building this way.
