The Briarwoods gotta go!

Comments

rayman

damn bro watch the whole thing before making a comment. Roshi literally corrected him 1 minute later

Kriothan

First here??

Drew

Me: waiting patiently for YaboiRoshi posting a video My Test I need to study for tomorrow: So you have chosen death.

Smash Bran'Discootch

OH SNAP! Roshi shouted me out! Alright, i will definitely keep dropping the little factoids then ^_^

Beef Gristle Mill

I got impatient and watched the rest of the season and now I'm super excited every time they post these.

OneOfTheDrunks

Pike voiced by Ashley Johnson who voices Ellie in the last of us series. Fun fact if you played those games.

Smash Bran'Discootch

So you've now seen "The Sun Tree Moment". It is an ICONIC moment from critical role. In the game, the Briarwoods didnt know about Pike yet, but there was another member(who wasnt included in this for legal reasons)who was hung up too. They also hunted and killed a bear and hung it from the tree as well for Vex's bear Trinket. As Matt is describing what they see, Marisha(Keyleth) is the first one who understood and just went, "Wait, what? No no no no no" with her hands over her mouth. Then sam asks, "Wait, is that us?" then EVERYBODY understood that that was a message from the Briarwoods. The cast has said since, "That was the moment we realized Matt was not fucking around and these people were DANGEROUS. It was a gamechanger." To see it animated so well with all the crazy details like the antlers being NAILED to the girl's head. And the fact that you can just hear the ropes creaking as the credits roll.. that shit was spine chilling.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Also, when they were describing the craziest monsters they've ever killed, a lot of those actually happened in the game. Keyleths was definitely the most brutal. She kept using gusts of wind to try to push the guy deeper into the lava, but the wind kept cooling off the lava, just prolonging the guy's death. A fun little detail is you can actually see those monster dog wolf things pictured in Delilah's book when Scanlan is flipping through it. A cool little bit of foreshadowing.

Dannyboy

Those horses didn't believe hard enough at the cliff lmao

Bosastar

I gotta wait a whole week for the next reaction lol

Keonja Hazel

So, Scanlan saved himself from almost dying off a cliff but he couldn't use his magic when his mouth was not covered. How does that even make sense.

Ethan

I mean if you go by actual game mechanics then you need your hands to move and mouth to speak when casting a lot of spells. But since it's just a show let's just say he was panicked, being dragged around, holding a book and also didn't have hands free.

Keonja Hazel

In the chase seen to save Scanlan you can see his mouth and hands not covered, but it's a show so whatever

Brandon Blue

This was the first big holy shit moment of the campaign. You guys should see their genuine reaction to this was nuts. Can't wait to see you guys see the rest. Can't come quick enough.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Vex is Laura Bailey who voiced Abby. Matt Mercer also has a single line in The Last Of Us 2. And Laura(Vex) and Travis's(Grog) sons name is on the wall in the museum in The Last Of Us 2.

Smash Bran'Discootch

His hands were occupied. Bigby's hand has somatic components to the spell. Which means it requires hands. No hands, no spell.

James Michael Morehouse

Most of the hangings were brutal…but take a look at the Keyleth person. She had the Antlers nailed into her skull. Blood near it suggests that she was alive when they were nailed in.

Jazmyne Mattucci

god i havent heard the phrase 'shot up the club' in a hot ass minute

Ted Cali

Actually, if memory serves, Travis STILL didn't get it and had to be explicitly told a couple of times. Otherwise, dead-on description of one of my favorite scenes in anything I've watched.

Ted Cali

They did a great job animating the Sun Tree (especially that sound design with the single rope creaking in blackness), but this is another one of those worth checking out the original gameplay. As Matt is describing the scene, everyone gets it at different times (since it's purely audio with no visual aid). It's fascinating to watch dread come over people in real time as their mind puts together what has happened and how fucking evil and dangerous these fuckers are. One of many comparison vids, for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGgpO13Icu8.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Marisha being the first to notice and just being like "I cannot believe this is happening", sam figuring it out from her reaction, "Is that us?", Laura looking like she's about to cry, Taliesin looking like his eyes are about to pop out of his head, and Liam and Travis just got very quiet and started looking down. All the while, twitch chat saying "OMG IT'S PERCY'S FAMILY" then as soon as the cast realized it you saw comments like, "Mercer, you crazy bastard" and "Holy shit, this just got DARK!" I remember at the time there was SO MUCH fan art of that moment all around tumblr.

chunky yet funky

I don't know if anyone has pointed it out, but Pike's voice actor is Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie from the Last of Us!

Isaiah Rodgers

10:52 this man built different bra🤣🤣🤣

Dude559

that's some nasty shit. Show's surpriginly dark. The lava incident with Keyleth was brutal af

2022-03-10 12:17:45 Love the reaction for this episode. Sidenote: I would love to watch Lupa, a session of D&D. If Sam Riegel was the DM or companion. I can almost see it being a hilarious session of D&D.

Jamel Valentine

Lupa is my nigga my close friend of mine say the same thing as a joke lol 😂😂😂

Tori

Another bit of trivia! Several of the characters have phrases or words associated with them, like Percy's "your soul is forfeit" (or any one of several other lines he throws out, Taliesen Jaffe is a wonder) or Grog's "I would like to rage." One of the few associated with Vax is "Dagger, dagger, dagger" because that is what Liam (his voice actor) would say whenever he was attacking with his daggers. Hence why Vax said that when he found the wooden stake in Gilmore's shop. :) Also, they don't explain this in the show, but the reason his daggers return to him is because of one of his belts. It recalls his daggers to his hands so he can throw them again. I think it's actually called the Belt of Recall, but I'm too lazy to double check.

CynicallySalty

Lmao the horses never fair well with Vox Machina

Tori

I feel like the horses never fair well in any dnd campaign. XD

Isaac

N'ah they were just double crossed. Bamboozled. Fooled. Got the wool pulled over their eyes. Got their chain yanked. Double crossed. They have been kidded! RIP carriage horses.

Vin

Hmmm they didn't peep the names on Percy's gun they saw it but lupa thinks those are the names of Percy's family members

Lightbane1905

Yep, the names on Percy’s gun are those who he intends to kill. The Briarwood’s and those who helped them slaughter his family.

Smash Bran'Discootch

It was even worse in the OG stream. Keyleth pushed the guy into lava, then used wind to try and push him deeper in to kill him, but the wind was cooling off the lava turning it into rock around him and just prolonging his death. Also, Keyleth killed a kid once before they started streaming. It was kind of an accident but she absolutely murdered a child lmao

Smash Bran'Discootch

In all honesty, thats pretty much any mount in any dnd campaign. Unless you have someone who takes the "Mounted Combatant" feat, because those fuckers will hand over their party to a dragon before they separate from their mount. "Can i ride my horse through the city?" "Yeah sure, the streets are definitely wide enough for it and you see plenty of people on various beasts of burden." "Okay, we're heading to the castle. Can I ride my horse inside?" "Inside...inside the castle? Like through the foyer, past reception, and straight into the audience chamber?" "Yeah." "No you cannot ride your horse inside of the castle."

Smash Bran'Discootch

Lupasan: "I wanna play DnD so bad, but it's so long..." Aye bro, hit me up. I'll run a one-shot for you sometime. A single session, self-contained adventure. You can usually knock those out in 3 or 4 hours.

Mario Huizar

Yo if you can run a single session with all 3 of them you would be Goated lol I think they would enjoy it too!

Devin B

Roshi noticed the names on the gun and corrected Lupa afterwards

Smash Bran'Discootch

It's easy enough to do long distance games by using Discord for voice and Roll20 for maps. And for a one-shot, you really only need one functional battle map and the rest can all just be there to give everybody a good idea of what they're looking at. Roll 20 is a free website for long distance TTRPGs. But they aint got time for that though lol

Big Daddy Dre

Bruh i thought Chloë Grace Moretz was voicing pike…sounds just like her😂

Big Daddy Dre

Can somebody explain to me how dnd works because judging from earlier comments the players don’t know what’s gonna happen until it happens

aostheory

Pretty sure Pike's voice actress is Ellie from the Last of Us, Ashley Johnson

Smash Bran'Discootch

Sure, no problem! So at it's core, DnD(dungeons and dragons) is a group storytelling exercise with game mechanics incorporated in in order to help drive the story. The game is ran by the DM(dungeon master) who either uses a pre-existing world or adventure(called a module) or create a whole world and story of their own. But the story is told by all of you. The players each create a character, give them a back story, motivations, goals, etcetera. They then choose a class(fighter, wizard, rogue, warlock, sorcerer, monk, blood hunter barbarian, artificer)who each have unique abilities and skills. The DM sets the stage, describes what the players see around them, have them interact with NPC's that the DM controls and describes. The players then tell the DM what they want to do and the DM has them roll dice to see what the result of their action is. Depending on a success or a failure, the DM will tell them the result and the story goes from there. For example, the player characters are in a tavern and they're talking to a bartender. One of them wants to pick the bartender's pocket while the other distracts him. So the DM will have them roll to see if they successfully pickpocket all the while holding a conversation with the player's character in real time. The story belongs just as much to the players as the DM and the players actions completely reshape the world and the adventure. A DM may have a whole session planned out and the players might decide they want to go to a whole different city. So the DM has to think on their feet and respond to the player's actions and their stories. Literally anything can happen and the players 100% dont have any idea what is going to happen until happens. But it works both ways, the DM can't plan for EVERYTHING the players are going to want to do. It is an infinite game that is only dictated by the borders of your imagination. Even if you have a group of people playing the SAME premade adventure with the SAME characters as someone else, their sessions are going to be COMPLETELY different. Thats why you can buy a single premade DnD adventure like The Curse Of Strahd and run it 50 times and have fun every single time you play.

Brandon Rodgers

Buddy really got yanked by some hentai tentacles

Vin

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but how long did it take you to realize that

StorySmith []

U guys have no idea how many horses lost their lives at the hands of vox machina by the end of the original campaign

Sera

That Scanlan scene always gets me.. He's too freaky

Argo2Unitard

Has anyone listened to the Hamontown Podcast or watched HarmonQuest?

2022-03-10 12:17:39 I would really encourage Lupa (or any of you guys) to give D&D or some other ttrpg a shot if you get the opportunity. It really can be whatever you want to get out of it, so if you have a friend who’d run a one shot contained story just to try it out, it doesn’t have to be an arduous experience. Also fucking shit up with magic is great.

Man I would run one for them in a second. Half of my DM experience at least is introducing new folks to the game.

Alejandro Rodriguez

Lmao “shoot up the club” I didn’t kno Lupa liked The Breakfast Club

Isaac

If they do, hopefully it won't be shitty. I seen many a video that went into detail of how disorganized and nightmarish bad D&D sessions can get. Like people trying to be like critical role and failing or being too anime for a game focused on euro fantasy. Lol

Didier

If they're too self-conscious to roleplay in public, they can always play D&D videogames like Baldur's Gate or Pillars Of Eternity.

John K

Doesn't D&D take a long ass time to learn ( especially how to be a DM)?

Mirz Mirz

LMAOOO the horses

Dexter

Next upisode gotta go! Up

I am a Forever DM of 11+ years now. Got a 3D printer and set up a TV tabletop for in person players with animated backgrounds and battlemaps, printed minis for the players, etc....However I cannot STAND Curse of Strahd anymore. That and Descent into Avernus is what EVERY player and their party wants to attempt. Either they get REALLY far and fail doing something stupid...try to go STRAIGHT to the castle (you can guess how that goes)...or make REALLY stupid decisions. I have had some that beat the module, have had some turn darkside and join the other side, have had some (because I include VERY RARE item rolls on a website) get super OP weapons and get over confident (only do this with veterans). Best story, Stumpy. The one handed, half assed, half orc. After fighting in a sewer finding alchemists making back alley "cure all" potions....they found where the mastermind behind it was working...as well as a BIG pool of bubbling brown liquid. This dumbass (played to his 8 intellect score) and was really interested in it (since it smelled almost like cherries and chocolate). He stuck his hand in expecting to scoop out some to taste....it was acid and he lost that hand. Now, being the pack mule of the group, they bottled up some of it in a glass vial and had it in his backpack. He stapled his shield to his missing hand arm (driving 2 pitons into it while the healer basically healed around it) and started off....but that acid is magical and ate through the vile...literally burning off 1 ass cheek. I still have the miniature STL file for him...he is in my hall of heroes.
