Unless it receives the Brotherhood treatment, I feel like Tokyo Ghoul is pretty much a skip; the anime's poorly thought divergence from the manga harmed the series (and I say this as someone who watched the anime before reading the manga).

Tokyo Ghoul was good until it diverted from the manga route after season 1. Tokyo Ghoul Re was somewhat okay but as a whole the series was kind of underwhelming as it got closer to the end.

I disagree. The Reaper got further than any other attempt at Koro's life, and much more efficiently (albeit with the help of Irina, but still). I think the main cast was able to capitalize their huge advantage over Reaper, though, that being their numbers. The Reaper was spread too thin, had to do too many things on his own, allowing the kids and Koro to take advantage of the cameras blind spots in the room while he was busy with Karasuma. Karasuma also figured out The Reapers weaknesses, being his endgame and defenses. There is also a spoiler reason I can't get into, but that's to name a few. Even a #1 at anything will have their weak points.

Honestly, I would recommend starting from the beginning, if you have the time. It's been a while, but I remember the manga filling in a few gaps with information the anime omitted, filling out a fuller picture of what's going on with the characters.

Yeah basically what @g l o m p said cause they do leave a lot of stuff out in the anime. If you don't want to start from the beginning then you can start the manga somewhere in the 60s cause that's around the time Kaneki gets tortured by Yamori and changes. Everything after that moment is different from the anime up until Tokyo Ghoul Re. Imo the transition to Re makes more sense in the manga than it does in the anime.

The one episode this season where Karasuma looked like he was auditioning to be the main character in another anime. He's even animated differently towards the end.

Even season 1 had some big cuts of content, the manga is fantastic but the anime is dogshit

its like the reaper said he was pretty much heading into unknown territory with koro add ontop of that karasuma who we know is nasty and the double double cross by irina. not much he could do especially since its no longer an assassination its a brawl in the open.
