Destiny in this world is seen as a mysterious force by most people (much like god in our world) which binds two people together... It's also believed that people can either follow the path of destiny of their own free will or try to resist it, which will bring grim consequences. Mousesack said something along the lines to Queen Calanthe during Pavetta's betrothal party "Honour destiny’s wish or unleash it’s wrath upon us" and again in this episode "Money can’t undo the Law of Surprise. Kings who’ve tried to outbid destiny end up on pikes.” shortly after this sentence Queen Calanthe dies after telling Destiny to "fuck off". Also they mention Destiny 51 times in the first season. Side note regarding ages as well: (by end of season 1) Geralt is 100 Yennefer is 90 Jaskier (Dandelion) is 40 Triss (witch who paid Geralt to cure Striga) is around 40-50 (which is young for a sorceress) Ciri is 16 Geralt and Yennefer don't age, Yennefer doesn't age physically because of magic (this is prevalent to all sorceress' and mages) and some also lives longer than normal humans as they can stop the aging process by the use of magic..... The oldest mage in the books died at 500 years old. Jaskier (in books) met Geralt when he was 18 but showrunners changed how they met, which meant they kind of made a mistake with timeline (which they admitted).

Just piling on, pleeeease watch the animated prequel movie "Nightmare of the Wolf" before y'all get into season 2. Its the same animation studio as Korra, and has a real Castlevania vibe in the violence and gore
