Pretty sure it was originally a manga. There's also an anime, but, as far as I know, it never finished. But yeah, most anime/manga adaptations end up with this cringey anime-like acting that just doesn't work in live-action format. Worst offender is one of the later antagonists. Lol

They absolutely did in Japan. Kaiji is stupidly, stupidly popular over there. Like, not even with kids or the crowd that watches anime. The anime adaption aired in a normal-ass timeslot and broke in the top 10 most-watched anime for the week (which is a HUGE accomplishment, since it's normally plugged up with stuff like Detective Conan and Pokemon that's been airing forever so normally only things that are Code Geass or Attack on Titan levels of popular can break into the list). It's so popular that it had two or three live-action movies in Japan and one in China. There's a reason anyone who was familiar with the series was calling Squid Game out for how similar its plot is to Kaiji. That shit is WAY too popular in Asia for the director to have never seen it.

I believe there was news that the person who made Squid Game was said to have been inspired by other Death Game like media just like Kaiji specifically. I wouldn't blame him for making it seem similar. I still think Squid Game had its own beats to it that makes it stand out and appeal that made it so popular but it's not exactly an original premise.

I saw this before squid game and I think squid game has better acting performances and better writing. This is really tropey and has that typical mediocre level of acting found where tv idols are cast.

I definately agree with the acting, i think Squid games cast and acting was fantastic as well as the cinemograph and set designs are so colorful. But where I really felt lacking was the games, they were either setup to be really unfair/ luck based or just too simplistic, while I get the premise is for the old guy to relive his childhood I don't feel like they really made things fair and for everyone to have a chance as the organisers claim. While Alice in borderland isn't the exactly fair either I think the games are at least more interesting, I still think Liar games takes the cake though.

Squid game definitely has a better cast and curb appeal, but Alice is better in the writing category in my opinion. And I think the games are better designed here. Each other their own pros and cons.
