I know i'm extremely late to this but something i'm understanding while watching this is that people aren't thinking about the fact that shiro NEEDS to have this conversation. It's entirely possible for him to actually not end up like that in the future solely due to the fact that he is able to discuss his resolve which is something he didn't do before

Chef MellowD

Man that “SHE’S KING ARTHUR?!?!?!?!” Would’ve hit different if they’d watched this one first 😭

Chef MellowD

“WTF?!?!? HOW DOES HE HAVE SO MANY????” -Lupa if they watched this first

ZappyZ

Its the star wars order debate. Which one do you prefer to see first on first watch, the originals that were made? Or the prequels made after to re contextualize the original story? Both work, but not everyone is going to agree on which way is best on first watch. My vote would be originals first, prequel after for first watch. Thats how it was originally meant to be anyway lol

Andrew shultz

What do you mean? I haven’t seen the Ilya magical girl show but I’ve seen everything else I think and don’t remember it coming up. Is that where it comes up?

Aight so the explanation on Lancer's master is kinda complicated. This is information you would have learned from the Fate route of the VN (which you usually play first), which has never received a proper adaptation, so I don't think it counts as spoilers. Each route of the VN gives different bits of information about the whole story. For example, in the Fate route, we learn hardly anything of Caster, Assassin, or Kuzuki, while in UBW they have a big focus. Basically Lancer's original master WAS a lady from the Magic Association, which is why Caster's first master said he knew her. However, she was also someone Kirei knew, so he was there when she summoned Lancer. Immediately after she did so, Kirei cut off her arm, stole her command spells, and left her to die. He also used a whole bunch of the extra command spells he got when he killed his father in Fate Zero to make Lancer obedient to him. And that's how we got to this point.

ElasticMemories

tl;dr Cancel said creepy priest said "I'll going to steal your man" to a lady

nigga read the description of this video

Omar

Archer is the true definition of wishing you could go back in time to give your younger self a good beating for all the dumb bullshit you would eventually do.

Renz

Being Lancer is suffering, Every time.

C J

ep 20?

ElasticMemories

The rise of the "Lancer is dead!" meme. There it is

Dous Dous

I remember first watching this and Emiya making me sick lol. Mans really told his future self "I aint gonna be nothing like you" only for Archer to be like "that train of thought is what made you into me" and Emiya just standing there not even considering a little on what FUTURE HIM has to say "Future me has regrets? Could never be me, I'll never have regrets." Thats like if myself from the future told me not to go out tonight cause Ima get shot and I just stood there the whole time like "Cant nobody shoot me, Ima real one, Im built different, YOU gon get shot, not me." Archer should've clapped him with the bow right after that.

Isaac

Not again. Completely different Lancer remember. But yeah Lancers do have a tendency to be told to kill themselves because their civility gets in the way of the real grand plan.

Emil

Man I wish they would react to carnival phantasm after all this

Tabbs

NOOOO I wish it was castlevania today instead :(

Outcast107

SO! I was rewatching before this episode drop and I saw a neat little easter egg. A bit of a spoiler if anyone is planning on watching Fate/aprophyca Sooo SPOILERS SPOILERS! In Saber's flashback when she is fighting and she stabbed that one knight. If you look closely, that Mordred. For those who don't know who that is, in King Arthur's tale, Mordred is suppose to be Arthur's son. Its a nice little tidbit and glad I rewatch that and got that easter egg. END OF SPOILER

JsnSkg

Next ep is so fucking EPIC.

Victor

Yeah, I caught that. The Knight of Treachery indeed.

Lola

For the ideology argument, I'm on Archer's side.

Lola

Thanks for the reaction!

Victor

It will be quite confusing why Kirei is Lancer's master if you haven't watched the Fate route, but it is still better than Sakura. I mean the girl disappeared for a good 2/3 of the series, I would be mad if she suddenly played an active role in the end of this war/ route.

Devin B

When someone talks about trying to make everyone happy they don't seem to realize that some people's happiness is at the expense of someone's downfall so it's literally impossible to make every single person happy which is why I think Kiritsugu knew being a champion of justice is nearly impossible. I can't help but feel bad for Archer cause he had to find that out the hard way.

Lola

Lmaoo your example killed me, but I agree Shirou's defense was weak as shit

Mikal Adkins

I think that's the main reason why a lot of Fate fans don't like Shirou.

None None

The "Saber kills Mordred" flashback is hilarious because it's been animated like four times now, but they all look completely different because spin-offs keeping giving shit designs that didn't have them before. The 2006 adaption had no idea what Mordred looked like, so they just made her "Saber, but shorter". Then UBW used the Apocrypha Mordred design. Then Apocrypha updated the murder weapon to the giant drill spear from Grand Order.

Viela Guay

Tbh the adaptation really does kill Shirou's reasonings, but yeah it's so fucking funny

Viela Guay

Tbh the funniest thing about watching reactors who went for F/Zero first is always seeing them expecting Sakura to have some relevance for the UBW route, because if they were actual sequels that's what one would logically expect narrative wise, but since instead you're jumping from a single story to a tri-branching story (and the middle branch at that) it just goes out the window

Devin B

@Viela Guay I'm anime only so I wouldn't know but is Shirou really that different compared to the VN. Like did the anime adaption take away from his character that much to make him how he is now.

Chinese Cartoons

Yeah, in the VN there are so many lines that are just his internal thoughts about stuff. They can't really do that in the anime so instead he just stares people down and says some goofy one liner

None None

The VN is like 60 hours long and, I'm not even exaggerating here, about 40-50 hours of that are just Shirou introspecting. By the end of it, you know exactly how every inch of his head works and why he thinks the way he does. He's a very, very different character when you can only see him from the outside.

Chinese Cartoons

Even Fate route doesn't really explain it. Nothing in the original FSN actually goes into detail about how Kirei is Lancer's master, it's just kind of implied through small tidbits here and there.. Hollow Ataraxia is where all the details about the how and why are actually revealed.

Jahkir

At least kiritsugu died but emiya has been doing this forever ik he broke inside

Dous Dous

I always suspected that since I figure there’s no way the character is just that stupid and you can’t possibly touch on everything in a series with like a ton of different “routes” so I give Emiya a grain of salt these days since idk the full authors intent but at the time (even now kinda lol) just seeing him made me want Archer to stab him twice in the elbow

Viela Guay

@Devin B. As the other comments said, yeah he literally goes from being a kinda OK protagonist to generally considered one of the best examples of the entire medium. For context the VN's word count is legit longer than the entire Bible (although that includes things like the many bad ends you can get by making a wrong decision, something the anime of course can't replicate so you really see him as more of a Mary Sue since you don't see the like 80 times you die because you turn left rather than right and such) and a huge amount of it is spent in his head. It's the usual complaint of visual adaptations of books is that often the narration goes out the window, which isn't much of a problem for cases where narration is mostly used for scenery description and such that you can show easily visually, but for cases like this it's the worst thing. Basically the VN is a massive character study about Shirou, with the various routes tackling the various explorations of his ideologies and personality, in the effort of holding up a mirror to the usual fantasy protagonist and asking what it would actually take psychologically to behave in those ways

ApplePieOG

That person Saber stabs on top of that hill is a very important character to her story, a main servant in Fate/Apogrypha and Fate/Grand Order Camelot. Soooo watch those too.

Danny

unfortunately archer emiya will forever exists as the realm of heroes is not connected with time. no matter what he does to the past emiya, he will still exist. and that is one horrible fate. imagine having to kill others to save others even though all you wanted was to save as mnay as possible. and having to do it for the rest of eternity. kiritsugu had no life in his eyes cuz he did the same thing. the difference was that he was able to find a family in the end and die somewhat peacefully even though his ideals failed. archer will forever be haunted by his failed ideals.

BZD

I’ve been waiting 19 episodes to say this, but: Lancer Died

BZD

And the messed up part is that he will continue to get summoned to grail wars like this and go through similar situations, and the problem is, because of Rin’s summoning he doesn’t have all of his memories right away, so he doesn’t realize that his target is right in front of him. Although an interesting thing is that since all three routes of Fate/Stay Night are different timelines, the Version of Emiya summoned in each one could be thousands of years older or younger than the other versions, because he exists outside of time.

Okay so basically Shirou actually does put some thought into the things he does and say in the VN but they cut out that thought process in the anime. Just watching the anime made me not like Shirou as a character because it made him seem like he doesn't have a valid reason for some of the things he does or have any logic behind his words but it's good to know that it was the anime's fault for the adaption of him and not the Fate series itself.

Musa

Is ep 20 dropping tonight too or triple upload next week?

baja

Kiritsugu realised it "too late", In the sense that it cost him dearly. Emiya is fcked for eternity

Pan Cakes

They mention counter force in this episode for a lil bit. if you guys keep watching all the fate series youll see that the counter force is OP AF

Musa

Oh oops, was going through notifications n didn't see it, my bad

Metal Upa

Kirei is best Master period. His character his amazing it's a pity it's not well explain in the anime in comparison with the VN but i just love this guy! Plus, Lancer is a G love this servant so much.. Love your reaction guys i'm really happy y'all reactin to this show it's my favorite show ever. Keep up the good work and love on you guys :)

Jay rellim

on tuesdays. but *might* be a day late since they're behind due to the wedding

Hakurei Oni

I mean she does have relevance you just don't see it until Heaven's Feel. Oher than that UBW is setup as a sequel to Zero in every other way. The VN and LNs are obviously different from the anime but I couldn't imagine how confusing UBW would be to someone who hasn't seen Zero especially since no one is watching the Fate route adaptation

Matthew Lassey

im glad you guys are going to watch heavens feel after this so many other characters get the spotlight that are kind of ignored or underplayed in the other routes.

Zonalsteve

Castlevania ?

Viela Guay

You literally just showed that she doesn't have relevance in this arc by having to reference HF. Just because there's one line of background dialogue that becomes contextualized in HF doesn't mean she has relevance. As someone who started with UBW, then Zero, then the VN's I think you're really overestimating the setup that Zero does. UBW is actually perfectly easy to follow as long as you don't need explicit info spoonfed to you. Zero does a great job as a prequel to UBW as it recontextualizes Shirou and Archer's conflict and sheds light on Kirie's nature that's far more important for the fate and HF routes than his rather comparatively inconsequential role in UBW. Tbh most of the confusion while watching UBW often seems to stem from the fact that they watched Zero first because there really are so many things that just aren't tackled much if at all in this route, such as Saber/Kiritsugu's relationship, Sakura in her entirety, Saber and Gilgamesh's relations, etc. Now I'm not going to be mad at anyone for starting with Zero, but there are some series demerits that are worth consideration that a lot of people ignore because they've grown maybe too comfy with linear storytelling

It's difficult to really explain what Hollow Ataraxia is if you haven't played it. In Japan, popular visual novels will often have something called a "Fan disc" released a year or so after it comes out filled with bonus content and such. Sometimes they contained minigames and short stories involving the characters. Fate/Stay Night's author went completely batshit insane with Fate's fandisc. It's got like 40 hours worth of text. 95% of it is just silly stand-alone scenes set in a world where the servants live alongside humans. Stuff like Archer, Lancer, and Gilgamesh having a fishing contest, Ilya, Saber, and Sakura getting into a fight over who the best little sister is, or Rin getting up in the middle of the night to drink some booze. A few of them even flesh out the lore a bit (Saber talking about her relationship with Gueinevere, Kazuki's entire backstory, and stuff). There's even one scene that was considered lore-heavy enough to be worked into one of the anime adaptions (I'm sure the comments will point it out when it happens). All of this nonsense is bookended by an actual serious story that explains why this nonsensical setting exists. The game opens with a long prologue about Bazett (Lancer's original master), then it'll keep cutting back to her after you've seen enough of the silly stand-alone scenes, and her story kind of builds up to the game's climax. It's actually a really good story that's sorta-kinda a direct sequel to Fate/Stay Night. Go find it if you're curious after finishing Fate/Stay Night. It's a good read.

Zonalsteve

My bad didnt read

MWS

will you be watching Heavans feel?

zanderbander

Damn, idk if they're gonna keep watching the fate series after this, but that was a cool cameo of who Saber killed on that hill.

Pocparks

rin being in the worst(2nd worst? nah this probably the worst) possible situation of her life while saber and shirou have a reddit argument with archer is one of the most unintentionally funny things about ubw to me

Abdul Hussein

How you gonna put up back to back episodes of castlevania and not fate smh.

Friendly Elites

damn i never realized that the person Saber stabbed in the flashback was Mordred, puts apocrypha in a new perspective

chou sion

here comes the fucking plot armor, fuck shiro and his ideals, archer should end him
