Season 3 is dark due to cartoon network dropping them in season 2. Thanks to the effort of fans we got a season 3 produce by dc only with no need to comply to a network but themselves.

The reason CN dropped the show is because they werent selling enough toys of young justice. But that's cause the fan base was much older.

Oh yeah this episode is fucked and dark as shit, for some many reasons.

The reason why this season is able to go so dark is because it wasnt controlled by cartoon network or anything like that. This season was brought back through a kickstarter after cartoon network cancelled it after its second season. Since they werent under cartoon network's "kid friendly" thumb, the creators had much more creative freedom.
