in my opinion, after watching Zero, UBW was a HUGE let down. Aside from the animation, the masters or servants weren't nearly as interesting and the over all story was kinda boring. And it kinda does a disservice to the characters that were in Zero.

Aftermath stories can be done well. If anything, it's more surprising that Zero was as good as it was comsidering the stigma surrounding prequels at the time. But no, UBW has no excuse for being a lesser product besides inferior writing.

(SPOILER WARNING) How do you think the characters aren't developed? Caster and Kuzuki are fully fleshed out, Archer's entire character is revealed and develops, and Shirou and Rin grow through their relationship. The characters that get developed the least are Lancer and Assassin and at least they're made to be likable. Everyone else like Ilya, Saber, Kirei, and Sakura all get focus in other routes. What more do you want?

Do they know that this series came out BEFORE Fate Zero did so the audiences wouldn't know who Saber is unless you watch Fate Stay/Night first? I watch Fate Stay Night --- UBW --- Fate Zero in this order which is funny to me because that's my personal ranked order to favorite to least favorite of the series. The animated Fate Zero came out in 2006, UBW animated came out in 2014. The original Fate/Stay Night, which they haven't watched (and may not watch?) came out in 2004... so yeah, this one they are watching came out 8 years after Zero.

The original Fate/Stay Night visual novel came out in 2004, the Fate/Zero light novel came out in 2006, which is also when the Fate route of FSN was adapted to anime format. Fate/Zero wasn't adapted into anime until 2010, and then UBW into anime in 2010 with the movie by Studio Deen, and then in 2014 as a TV series by Ufotable. Fate/Zero is meant as a prequel, so technically speaking you're supposed to finish all 3 routes of FSN before Zero, but nobody recommends doing that today because the Fate route anime is old as shit and wasn't adapted well.

You can tell the UBW writers assumed the audience watched Zero, since they don't even bother trying to hide Gilgamesh or that Kirei's working with him. And they added in some extra scenes of Rin interacting with Sakura, since everyone knows they're sisters already and the show had to establish that they pretend not to know each other (as long as they recognize Sakura, anyway).

I was kinda hoping they'd watch stay/night, cause as far as I know stay/night, UBW, and heavens feel all have the same intro or close to it then they diverge into different stories. I think that's really cool and it feels like I'm one of few who thinks that stay/night wasn't that bad, granted I haven't seen it in awhile but still I remember really liking it and UBW.

This has fuck all to do with the "UBW writers". The VN was released in _2004_. The scenes in this 17 year old VN were exactly the same. There was no "hiding who Gilgamesh or Kirei was" because Fate/Zero literally didn't exist. It came out way later as a prequel.

Nah, the anime writers made some pretty blatant changes from the VN. Compare the scene where Rin and Sakura bump into each other in the hall. In the VN, Rin takes the moment to ask Sakura if she's been holding up alright, how things have been going in her life, ect. That scene is obviously meant to foreshadow their relationship. In the anime, the writers knew most of the audience knew Rin and Sakura were sisters from Fate/Zero, so they completely rewrote the scene to make it clear that they pretend to barely know each other, even when they're alone. There's also a Kirei and Gilgamesh scene that's completely anime-original, but we haven't gotten to it yet. The original VN hid Gilgamesh and treated his existence as a big plot twist. (even in the UBW route, after everyone already knew him from Fate)

So in the fate universe there are three main routes: Fate,Unlimited Blade Works, and Heavens Feel. Anime wise the fate route came out in like 06 by studio dean. I wouldnt recommend watching it. But that route had saber as one of the main characters and it has s good ending. UBW focuses on Rin a bit more like you said, with Heavens Feel centering around sakura(Rin's sister) and has the what people would call the true ending. It's also the most dark of the 3 routes.

What I love so much about Archer is that he quite literally is all talk. He plays mind games that save his own life, considering that while he is an adaptable and reliable servant, his physical ability/powers just do not measure up to servants that would win the holy grail: instead, he measures up with his intelligence.
