Ah yes, one of my favorite anime’s . If you like the anime, I would definitely recommend the light novel. Its not for everyone, it reads like a textbook at times and delves into political theory and philosophy but its well worth it if you enjoy the series.

The setting is based on World War 1. The easiest way to recognize is the Pickelhaube helmets (the spiked helmets the "Empire" wears) which were worn by the German Empire for the first half of World War 1. The uniforms both sides were are also identical to uniforms the French and Germans wore, but that's not as simple for most people to recognize.
