One of my favorite things about Golden Kamuy is how it'll introduce a character working against our main duo and you'll be like "What an asshole," and then it reshuffles everyone's alliances and joke's on you, you love the guy now, also here's his backstory that will make you deeply sad.

I think Tanigaki told Tsurumi that story cause he felt that after spending his time in the army to get revenge on Kenkichi just to find out there was no need for revenge he found himself with no purpose being in the army until Tsurumi gave him one.
