the anime skipped more than 5-6 stories, the 4 ovas cover some of them but not all of them, it was all weird choices from the studio, they contain a lot of good stories like shiraishi's past!

Lol. The whole time that barber was talking, I'm just sitting here like, "Are they really gonna do a Yojimbo episode?" Nah. Just a reference. Still fun, though. I also think it's funny how they're using the characters here. It's quite ironic that Hijikata is being made out as a money-hungry mercenary. The real Hijikata died in the final battle of a war he helped start in a vain attempt to preserve the feudal system in Japan. He saw himself as fighting against the corrupting moneyed influences of the pro-foreign Meiji government as did many of his colleagues. Meanwhile, you have a soldier of that new government, Lieutenant Tsurumi, who is looking to start a war and make a new country. The similarities to the Boshin War which claimed the real Hijikata's life are striking. Tsurumi is a personification of the real Hijikata.
