So if he doesn't watch the intro for spoilers.. how does he get the background picture on? I wondered the same thing during the Yorknew arc

Yeah, so this is one of the things the 1999 version did better. And by that I mean they introduced Kite and showed that encounter with Gon in the beginning of the series in episode 1. So this encounter seemed a lot less random and convenient for people who saw the original anime or read the manga. Also us seeing Gon meet Kite gave more credibility to Gon wanting to set out from Whale Island to be a Hunter and find Ging imo.

Like Tyler said, for some reason, the 2011 anime omitted Kite's introduction from episode one and all mention of him up until this point. Kite is Gon's version of what Shanks is to Luffy from One Piece. He's the real reason Gon even wanted to be a Hunter in the first place, and the person who told him Ging was alive because Gon was initially led to believe he was dead by Aunt Mito.

Don't get too hyped on this arc. Many of the episodes are slower than the fast-paced glory that is the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong, it has it's incredible moments, but for some reason a lot of people think it's the best of the best and over-hype, which just leads to disappointment all around.

That’s why opinions exist lmao for me the “slower” part and the meticulously crafted details and build up is why it’s the best arc in shonen like enjoy the details so much

Yeah to this day I still don't know why they never incorporated a large chunk of chapter 1 in the 2011 anime like they did the 1999 one. You're supposed to meet Kite at the beginning of the story. He tells Gon that he actually has a living father who's a hunter because his aunt lied to Gon his whole life, like another comment said Kite is supposed to be the Shanks of this story.
