Yeah. Lakan didn't know that Maomao's mother was there until now. You can tell by how persistent he was to get close to Maomao, if he knew her mother was still in there, he would storm through Verdigris to meet her.

Apothecary Diaries is definitely an anime that requires careful attention to subtitles and actions that happen. I do like that the anime doesn’t just spoon feed you what happens and you do have to make some inferences, it keeps you invested in the show instead of just expecting it to be given to you. If it weren’t for Frieren, this would definitely be my undisputed number one of the season

Maomao's mom wanted the two Nobles who were fighting over her to stop because it was jacking up her price. So she came up with a plan to lower her own buyout price to practically 0 so that Maomao's dad could afford her. But then, to her knowledge, the man ghosted her after she'd gotten pregnant and had his child. Meanwhile he had been sent off for 3 years by his father because of a "disgrace" in the family.

That wasn't quotation marks, btw. Maomao's mother did send her own finger and Maomao's little finger from when she was a baby, as a form of curse in her moment of despair and rage. You can see that her little-finger is a bit malformed, but it has mostly healed from that time.

The anime did this moment justice! This is the moment where everyone sees that Lakan isn’t the villain we thought he was and it’s done so good! I’m also glad this show got a second season! My favorite anime of both the fall and winter seasons!

In the manga there was a note for her dad in a compartment under the rose but he didn't see it. They simplified things for the anime and made the rose the whole message.

You asking about why she hid Mao Mom? I think she was just salty that he (almost) ruined her business and he DID ruin her best courtesan and then just left her for 3 years. They didn’t know the reason why he left, only that he got the courtesan pregnant and left. That’s my theory.

The reason why bones grow back up to the first joint even if they are torn off until the age of two is because bones are made of cartilage until that age. Cartilage has a higher regenerative ability than bone, so even if it is torn off, new bone can be created. Specifically, bones grow actively until the age of two, and cartilage cells inside the bones divide to create new bone.

From the earliest bacstories we see of Maomao, she was, so she could have changed that decision whenever she wanted in the past 10-15 years. And even now, she didnt want to let him see her.

Two possible reasons: 1) because she wanted to punish him for abandoning Fengxian; and 2) she’s Fengxian’s mother and didn’t want to entrust either her daughter or granddaughter to him. #2 is the only reason I can think of as to why she flipped out when he finally returned, and why she never let him take Maomao with him, no matter how much he offered to gain custody of her. She might’ve realized that he didn’t mean for this to happen as he lay sobbing in the mud during a rainstorm, and that’s why he wasn’t blacklisted completely, but she wasn’t going to trust him beyond that.

I always thought the reason was because Maomao's mom (Fengxian) is the old lady's daughter. I don't think it is stated in the anime, but the old lady is Maomao's biological grandmother. To her, Lakan is the bastard who knocked up her daughter, ruined her life, and then abandoned her.

For anyone that loved this show as much as I did I HIGHLY recommend a show called "Hyouka" it follows the same formula as apothecary diaries with new mysteries to solve each ep with an over arcing story, a very sweet romance and amazing characters it doesn't have a historical aspect to it though still an amazing show nonetheless. I'm really going to miss this show this was my favorite anime for winter and my second from fall of last year second only to JJK I can't wait for S2 in 2025

-mao mao actually lost the tip of her finger, i think they shown it before that her finger was crooked when she asked she wondered what kind of medicine love would make. It regrew back but its crooked - her mom actually looks worse in manga, her nose literally fell off already but it didnt matter coz lakan sees her how she was before - mei mei also liked lakan - its kinda sad because mao mao's mom died soon after being bought out, the disease was too far gone. Even if he was abroad I feel like he couldve written her a letter at least he had 3 whole years to inform her

Maomao's mom plotted to get pregnant so she couldn't get sold since two guys were already bidding on her. Lakan couldn't afford to bid on her so she figured out how to make her undesirable to the guys wanting to buy her by getting pregnant. Since Lakan was visiting every 3 months then he could've bought her out and she'd be free to be with him. But then Maomao's dad got kicked out of the rear palace and Lakan got sent off to study abroad which screwed up the plan.

Omg I’ve read the manga light novel and webnovel for this series and this was one of fav arc!! I still can’t believe we got an anime for it and it was beautifully animated. I can’t wait for season 2😫 This is kind of random but have you guys watched Nana (2006)? The anime has 47 eps. If not I would love to see you guys reacting to it one of these days!

I recommend The Dangers In My Heart as a replacement. YaBoyRockLee is watching and loving it! It's a rom-com with 2 seasons of 12/13 eps (25 total), the season 2 finale just dropped so the anime is still new and it's very much talked about.

If Maomao was able to figure out that it probably wasnt really his fault without being able to talk to her mother, Im pretty sure grandma should know more after talking with the woman in question. And Meimei wouldnt have let him see her if she thought he was 100% to blame for the incident either, so it is reasonable to assume grandma knows the whole story and still wouldnt let him see her.
