I've been meaning to leave a note here to acknowledge a situation that might be weird, although I certainly don't want it to be. A few of the recent choices from the subscriber lottery have been films that, as it turned out, I did not like very much. And I've been a little worried that the recommenders might think that I am disappointed in their choices, or that my opinion somehow represents a castigation of their taste.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Before I'm through with life, I want to have had the most expansive engagement with cinema possible. I learn a great deal from films that I don't care for, and with many of these selections, I am discovering notable work that wasn't even on my radar. So even when I don't like it (individually), I actually quite like it (holistically).

In other words, I try to be a cultural vegetarian. Some cinema may be bad, but no film is ever bad for you.
