Here's a thought from a Gen X'er - when Viet Nam was going on, there was a draft. That is some major trauma. I think these folks grew up and compensated with materialism and solipsism that now people think is terrible. But just think about a draft.. those were crazy times. And there's never been one since.

More than the draft, just the new vividness of the war through broadcast television. War doesn't necessarily have to lead to therapeutic or addictive use of materialism and solipsism. Many countries like the US, England, New Zealand and Canada returned from the world wars with a desire to ensure that everyone be saved from the horror they experienced, they created massive welfare projects organized international political organizations and developed diplomatic and economic efforts to reduce the threat of impending war. Some consequences not so positive may have been incurred. But Maybe Doug Cowles is right and that something historically particular about Vietnam may have done something to the boomers but what?
