What are you talking about? This is a happy anime. Didn't you see how happy Rengoku was at the end? Also, the anime doesn't cover it, but the end scene with the Hashiras is supposed to be more meaningful since Rengoku is pretty much the only Hashira unanimously respected by the rest. Most of the other Hashiras have grown up, lived, and/or trained at the Rengoku household with or by Rengoku.
