So about the "king" part for Theon's dad: before Danerys' ancestors conquered the continent there were many smaller kingdoms, including the Iron Islands. That is why the king leads the 'seven' kingdoms. After the Targaryn family was deposed by Robert, Theon's dad led a rebellion, lost, and was forced to send his last living son, Theon, to be fostered by Ned Stark, one of his enemies, with the implication that if he rebelled again they would kill Theon.

The Greyjoys' whole identity is around being hard. Not strong or honourable, just hard. Balon Greyjoy couldn't hug his son - it would never even occur to him. Though I'm not sure his claim that he "takes his crown" is right. It seems to me like he let his crown be taken from him, and he needs his daughter to take it back. When Bronn answered Tyrion's question about killing babies with "how much?", Tyrion's face was interesting. He seemed taken aback at first, but then pensive. We didn't see much of Daenerys, but what we did see wasn't good. Her khalasar is dying. And it wasn't big to start with. Usually, a bastard son can be legitimised. If Stannis claimed the son as his, that would probably make the child a legitimate heir. As for Robert's bastards, they probably can't be legitimised but some may still follow them just because they're of the former king's blood. More so than Joffrey at least.
