What you said about the family influence and the black/white aspect is true. It happens in many small tightly knit ethnic communities. So this happened with Italian Americans, Irish Americans and other communities as well. Avon Barksdale represents something of a traditional black perspective, along with Prop Joe. Later in the show, the decline of this traditional social structure will become more clear with Marlo, Cheese, and others. It's already a different thing than it once was, which is discussed, but Avon's kind of old-school.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

I don’t think it’s a “black/white thing, I think it’s an American/English thing tbh. Even the redneck Yankees are all in for their families. Even the “religious” side of that argument is way more American than British . This nation as a whole have decided that science is more important than religion. It’s why we have separated Church and state. Something the Americans will probably never do.
