The game this is adapting came out in 2015 and was set in real time. The "December 2016 disaster" they mention was an actual ticking clock, telling players that the final battle was going to take place that month and you'd have to play through all seven singularities before then to participate in it. (the singularities are tied to this disaster, so if those aren't fixed by the time the final battle comes, it can't be averted at all) The English version had to change it to 2018 because it came out two years later. So yeah, their trip to 2004 (the year F/SN is set in) was a visit to the past. If you remember Cartoon Network's Time Squad, that's basically what a singularity is: Something in the past is going wrong, and they need to fix it before it starts fucking with the normal timeline. In this case, absolutely none of this shit about Fuyuki being destroyed was supposed to happen, so they needed to clear it up a bit so the World can just erase the issue (they'll go more into what that entails later) ...and you only get to see two of the seven singularities in anime form. You know the 26 episode Bablyonia anime? That's ONE of the seven singularities. That's how blasted long this game's story is. It's well over 200 hours of pure text (500+ counting events). The anime could only reasonably adapt the two most popular singularities. There's like, three different manga adaptions if you get curious enough to see what was skipped. (but the singularities are all stand-alone enough that they're not that big of a deal) Also lol at the First Order forgetting to mention Mash's class. I never noticed that before. That's hilarious. In the game, it's basically always on-screen whenever you're in battle.
