There's a lot of time to read on a boat.

Also, I read A Short Introduction to the 17th Century and it was terrible. From my Amazon review, lest any other of your readers be tempted by it: "Really not enjoying this. To start with it's a chapter taken from a much longer book and refers to things which were, I hope, explained in earlier chapters but which get short shrift here. It also reads like an extended opinion piece without much reference to the historical record. The author is clearly very clever and wants everyone to know this. It's what 18th Century historians might sound like when they get together in the bar after a conference. It is not a good introduction."

Re the Indian ghost stories book being underwhelming, I don't know if you've come across this volume (or indeed if I've recommended it to you before), but I think it might be up your street: https://www.blaft.com/collections/new-arrivals/products/ghosts-monsters-and-demons-of-india

This is a problem I have run into a few times. I'm sure I've told the story of having a supervision with a world expert on Kant who simply could not conceive of how little I knew.
