Really feel you on the gift-giving thing. Whenever I'm buying even something as small as a birthday card, I spend way more time thinking about which card to get than I think most people would. I want it to feel meaningful, so if it's something as short-lived as a birthday card I want it to feel like it's from *me*, rather than just being something that anyone could have got them. I don't want it to be something generic and thoughtless, but I also don't want it to feel like it has a message that isn't in character for me to give. I think for most people, they're more concerned with the notion that you did something for them just by getting them a card, but that's not how I think about it. And with gifts, I'm the sort of person where "it's the thought that counts" doesn't apply. If someone gets me something that I don't like or can't use... Well, then it was just a waste of money and storing it is a waste of space, so it's actively negative. And I project that expectation when trying to think of something to get for other people, when it's probably not something that they're as concerned with.
